The Mutt E-Mail Client - I have recently started to use mutt for checking my gmail email. I have to say that once you get it all setup you can blaze through emails.

Subversion - This is another application that completely changed my life as a developer. If you are creating websites or working on a new app for a site or even just trying to keep Wordpress updated Subversion (SVN) is an absolute must.
